Service Life of Silicone Products (General Industry Reference)
The service life of silicone products mainly depends on five factors: raw material grade, curing system, temperature, ultraviolet radiation, chemical media, and repeated compression & friction. The longest service life is achieved under static, room-temperature and light-shielded conditions.
I. Reference by Application Scenarios
1. Industrial static gaskets / O-rings (indoor room temperature, minimal disassembly, high-quality fumed silica silicone)
Performance retention period: 8~12 years; General compound silicone: 3~5 years.
2. Industrial dynamic parts, automotive silicone buttons, sealing gaskets (intermittent high temperature + repeated compression)
Design service life: 3~6 years. Continuous working temperature above 120℃ shortens the lifespan to 1~3 years.
3. Outdoor weather-resistant silicone (with UV-resistant formula)
Under sunlight and ozone exposure: 3~8 years. Ordinary transparent silicone tends to turn yellow outdoors, with obvious aging within 1~2 years.
4. Food-grade silicone kitchenware, baking trays, silicone molds (repeated high-temperature steaming/baking & cleaning)
Material performance can be maintained for 5~8 years; Replacement is recommended after 2~5 years for hygiene safety. Baby silicone products are suggested to be replaced every 1~3 years.
5. Electronic silicone keypads (indoor room temperature pressing)
High-quality platinum-cured silicone: up to millions of keystrokes, 3~8 years. Ordinary peroxide-cured silicone has a shorter service life and is prone to yellowing and tackiness.
II. Shelf Life (Unused products, stored at room temperature, dry and away from light)
Qualified finished silicone: over 10 years. Premium formulations can even reach 20 years with slow elasticity degradation.
III. Signs of Aging (Replace immediately if any occurs, regardless of service time)
- Hardening, loss of elasticity, no rebound after compression
- Surface cracking, fine crazing, chalking, tackiness or oil bleeding
- Strong odor, easy to tear
IV. Key Factors Affecting Service Life
- Temperature: Thermal oxidative aging is the primary cause. Aging accelerates sharply at higher temperatures. Rule of thumb: service life roughly halves for every 10℃ temperature rise.
- UV Radiation: Direct sunlight speeds up yellowing and surface cracking. Black silicone has better UV resistance than transparent or colored silicone.
- Chemical Media: Engine oil, solvents, strong acids and alkalis accelerate swelling and degradation.
- Mechanical Fatigue: Continuous repeated compression, bending and friction shorten service life. Static gaskets last much longer than dynamically moving parts.
V. Tips to Extend Service Life
- Avoid long-term direct sunlight and prolonged exposure to temperatures over 200℃
- Clean with neutral detergents; avoid strong solvents
- Prevent scratches from sharp objects; store in cool, dry and dark places when not in use
